Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example that art can be an instrument for activism. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific Jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
